Transpower owns and operates the National Grid – the high voltage transmission network connecting areas of generation with towns and cities across New Zealand. It also operates the electricity system in real-time and manages the wholesale electricity market. In 2020, the State-owned Enterprise released Whakamana i Te Mauri Hiko, a key paper examining the potential future scenarios that may impact Aotearoa New Zealand's energy future. It shows how accelerated electrification stands to provide a stronger, more reliable system with much lower reliance on fossil fuel imports at the same time as cutting average household energy costs.
