Downstream once again demonstrated its role as the forum that brings the New Zealand energy sector together to discuss, debate, and inform the choices ahead.
With a strong focus on evidence and facts, Downstream 2026 challenged a number of persistent sector myths, helping to surface the real risks and opportunities facing the industry. The programme explored global and domestic fuel security risks, balanced by discussion on renewable development commitments, access to finance, cross‑sector collaboration, and the growing role of at‑scale demand response.
Delegates gathered in record numbers at Tākina Wellington and were welcomed with several new features for 2026. These included an expanded welcome function on the evening prior, and a new third content stream on day one. This stream focused on practical applications of technology across the sector, ranging from asset optimisation and domestic battery arbitrage to rural solar system calculators and orchestrated demand response solutions.
Attendance reached a new high, with 578 registrations – the largest in the event’s history – representing 231 organisations from across the energy value chain. The event was supported by 51 foundation partners, sponsors, exhibitors, and supporters.
Beyond the formal programme, Downstream 2026 reinforced its reputation as an event where connection matters. The exhibition floor was consistently busy across both days, and networking events created genuine opportunities for engagement, conversation, and relationship‑building across the sector.
Early attendee feedback has been overwhelmingly positive:
“Downstream remains the premier energy event of the year”
“Beautiful food – best at a conference”
“Best networking drinks ever – great food, mocktails, live music”
“Exhibitors were great across both days”
“I thoroughly enjoyed the event and learned a lot about the industry”
