Richard’s legal background and the knowledge and multi-disciplinary skills acquired in the domestic and international oil industry gives him the foundation to consult to a wide range of clients in the energy sector. Richard’s specialist areas include the influence of international oil and gas markets on energy supply; the impact of energy efficiency and environmental policies on the energy sector; and the challenges facing major energy users around gas supply.
Prior to establishing Hale & Twomey Limited in 2001 with Ian Twomey, Richard worked for Shell for over 15 years in a variety of roles ranging from commercial upstream activities in New Zealand, international trading based in London and managing supply to Shell New Zealand’s marketing businesses. Richard also undertook a number of specialist management roles including change management initiatives to deliver organisational change and evaluation of continued refining investment in Australia.
Richard currently provides secretariat support for the Major Gas Users Group (MGUG), which comprises Ballance Agri-Nutrients Ltd, Fonterra Co-operative Group, New Zealand Steel Ltd, Oji Fibre Solutions Ltd, and Refining NZ.
